1.0 Overview of On-Farm Testing

ACGG’s on-farm chicken performance testing is implemented in Tanzania, Ethiopia and Nigeria to evaluate at least 24 introduced and local (native and non-native) chicken strains under semi-scavenging management conditions for productivity, adaptability, and preference by farmers . The preference of various actors in the poultry value chain for chicken strains tested by ACGG will be rated through individual interviews and participatory methods. Information on chicken management practices of farmers, growth in household income and improvements in household nutrition will also be documented. This On-farm Chicken Performance Testing Protocol is developed as a follow-up to the [http:acgg.wikispaces.com/file/detail/ACGGProdBaseline-TraininManual-19Oct15.pdf| ACGG Producer Level Baseline Survey ]Manual //and ACGG On-station Chicken Performance Testing Protocol.

The selected File:acgg/Final ACGG Framework Site Selection28Dec15.pdf program sites for ACGG’s on-farm chicken performance testing comprise of a total of 3 countries, 15 sub-national zones (SNZ) comprising 53 ‘districts’ and 203 ‘villages’. Forty farmers in each village will be involved in the on-farm activity providing a total of around 8,120 smallholder farming households. The on-farm testing work will be coupled with Community-level Farmer Innovation Platforms to engage farmers in the co-creation of solutions to their challenges and help decide what genotypes and service delivery models work best for them. Focus group discussions (FGDs) will be arranged with farmers to get detailed information on selected topics, such as trait and strain preferences. The ACGG on-farm monitoring study training of enumerators, supervisors and sub-national coordinators of Tanzania, and ToT in Nigeria have been already given. The Ethiopian ToT training will be conducted from May 23rd to 27th/2016 at Holetta Agricultural research center at Holetta. based on the comment received from Tanzania and Nigeria training the training manual is improved.
