About ACGG
The vision of the African Chicken Genetic Gains (ACGG) program is to set up a multi-country network of public-private partnerships that will increase access of poor smallholder chicken farmers to their preferred, well-adapted, and highly productive germplasm and to ensure ongoing genetic improvement of the stock. This program aims to increase the poultry production and productivity of poor smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa, especially women, which could serve as a pathway out of poverty. We believe that the successful testing, adaptation, multiplication, and adoption of high producing chicken genotypes is critical for accelerating realized productivity growth in sub-Saharan Africa. More specifically, the program will target poor women and help them gain access to one of the most critical inputs, their preferred germplasm.
The ACGG Program Team will work through community and regional innovation platforms to link the upstream discovery and breeding work to actual germplasm delivery and productivity optimization in women farmers’ farms. We believe that this goal of increased production will lead to more access to poultry meat and eggs in rural communities, which may led to increased household animal protein consumption. We aim to focus on opportunities to leverage the potential for synergistic effects on poverty reduction and improved nutrition from increased production. Overall, we believe that ACGG provides a timely opportunity for women farmers to activate the smallholder chicken value chain in an innovative manner, with the potential for significant production and productivity increase and impact for smallholders in sub-Saharan Africa.
